Much like the recent storm hit the northern region the previous evening, Manchester City swept the visitors aside at the their home ground. It was a emphatic 3-0 victory for the City coach's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their championship potential as they consolidated their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for Manchester United

This scoreline marked back-to-back Women's Super League losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since last May, leaving them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their championship aspirations severely dented.

United’s ability to juggle league and European soccer with a thin squad has been a hotly discussed topic since they qualified for the UCL. Reviewing the calendar, it always seemed this was the period that would truly test this ability. Sadly for the away side, they appeared fatigued throughout, the landmark win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Commanding Opening Period

Final Period

The most obvious adjustment came from Skinner at the half-time as Melvine Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the game. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came most likely to score, rattling the woodwork, but the away team were offensively poor and were unable to record a one shot on target.

The hosts, in contrast, could have extended their lead when a superb Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it was insignificant to the hosts. After failing to defeat any side who finished above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have wins against the Gunners and United to place them in a commanding standing after nine games.
