Can You Crack It? That Forgotten Netherlands Invention Which Forged the Modern World
One can find many candidates for the designation as “world’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.
As per a new book, though, that title belongs to the mechanised sawmill invented by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, constructing a simple trading ship necessitated approximately ten sawyers working for three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered sawmills, the same quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than a week.”
Owing to their rapid automated saw, that converted logs to planks using almost no human effort, the Dutch were able to build vessels more quickly than any other nation, an advantage that sparked a century of Dutch naval, financial as well as cultural supremacy across Europe and the globe.
The Original True Manufacturing Machine
The inventor's sawmill, contends the writer, represented “mankind’s first authentic industrial machine.” A wind turbine rotated a gear. A single part transformed its circular motion into up-and-down motion for the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed that same spinning movement into a lateral movement feeding the log to the cutter. A geared mechanism moved the log ahead one precise increment per cycle.
“Every component seemed modest by itself. Corneliszoon’s brilliance was to combine these parts so they acted in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing with each downward motion while advancing on every return stroke. This constituted an astonishingly intelligent use of basic components.”
